Dr. Rusvay Tibor értelmiségi családból származik, édesapja állatorvos volt. A középiskoláit 1944. évben végezte el, majd az egyetemre iratkozott be, ahol a bölcsészkaron irodalomtörténetből nyert diplomát. Ezt követően elvégezte a Pedagógiai Főiskolát is, majd pedig a Lenin Intézetben szerzett oklevelet. Egyetemi tanulmányai után Tatabányán, Cegléden és Vácott tanárként dolgozott, 1956 elején pedig a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia aspiránsa lett, és ösztöndíjasként Lengyelországba küldték ki, ahol a Varsói Tudományos Akadémián dolgozott.
